Visit Durham’s American Tobacco Historic District
One of America’s most successful entrepreneurial legacies endures in the American Tobacco Historic District of Downtown Durham which has transformed itself into the city’s vibrant entertainment district. What started in a shack, with its first delivery carried into town by two blind mules, the American Tobacco Company would become the world’s largest tobacco company and its founder, Washington Duke, would also found Duke University.
There’s no denying the historic presence of the brick factories, warehouses, and smokestacks of the district. But the true wonder of the area is what goes on today with its thriving restaurants and culture that make it a unique destination. Enjoy the spicy flavors and throwback 60s music of Cuban Revolution or grab something a little easier on the stomach at Saladella with its organic, locally-sourced, gourmet and vegetarian sandwiches and salads.
In the center of the campus, the old American Tobacco Company power plant now houses the Full Frame Theater. This year celebrate the 22nd annual Full Frame Documentary Film Festival from April 4-7, 2019. Over 100 films will be screened alongside panels and discussions regarding nonfiction filmmaking.
