Visit Chapel Hill for a Romantic Valentine’s Day Getaway
The best part of traveling is getting to know the town you’re in. Stopping in at the landmarks, dining in the local eateries, and discovering the most interesting small shops in town all contribute to an excellent trip and give you an authentic experience that you and your special someone will remember for a lifetime. And there’s no better holiday getaway for lovers than Valentine’s Day, especially when you find yourselves in a place like Chapel Hill. Follow our itinerary below and you will have the most memorable romance-packed trip you have ever taken.
There’s no problem with sleeping in, especially when you’re trying to relax and escape the stress of daily life. Take the morning to yourselves (and our delicious breakfast) and then lace up your sneakers because you’re going hiking! The private grounds of Hippol Castle have long fascinated travelers and students from around the world. Just before the castle itself, you’ll find an access point for a hiking trail named Lover’s Loop. It’s a short trail that hosts a few locally-famous landmarks for lovers, such as the Lovers Leap Lookout and the stone Lover’s Chair. Enjoy the fresh air of Lover’s Loop as you walk hand-in-hand with your significant other near the mysterious grounds of Gimghoul, pack some snacks, and let the rest of the world disappear for awhile.
Later, the evening will take you to one of the must-see destinations in Chapel Hill, the revitalized 1920’s-era Varsity Theatre. Originally known as the Sorrell Building, this Chapel Hill landmark provides a retro-style setting that will make Valentine’s Day absolutely unforgettable and unique. This year, Varsity Theatre’s Red Carpet event on February 13th and 14th is Gone with the Wind. Journey back to the Civil War for the most epic and romantic story ever told. Hailed as one of the greatest films ever made (and still at the top of the box office record books), Gone With the Wind is the perfect date night activity and Valentine’s Day couple’s deal. Plus, the period setting will transport you back to the year of the movie’s release, 1939, with its vintage décor, old-school popcorn, and real film projection. Tickets to the Varsity Theatre Red Carpet event this year are $20.00 and include concessions of popcorn and fountain drinks as well as a small plate buffet catered by Med Deli at intermission.
