Explore the Eno River on a Spring Wildflower Hike
Chapel Hill is surrounded in a unique landscape covered in natural beauty, dense forests, diverse wetlands, and some of the most beautiful wildflowers on the east coast. Now that spring is finally here, the best way to experience Chapel Hill is to get outdoors and find out what makes the area so attractive this time of year for yourself.
The Eno River Association hosts its own seasonal series of hikes and outings in an effort to explore the Eno River and allow its visitors and habitants to learn about and enjoy the beautiful natural landscape in the Eno River Basin. Normally inaccessible and not open to the public for recreation, the guided hikes are a can’t-miss opportunity to see some of the region’s most picturesque and untouched natural beauty.
The spring hike series, a tradition since 1969, is the Eno River Association’s oldest hike series and features the wonderful spring wildflowers that bloom along the river’s banks while other hikes may explore a historic site or follow one of the river’s scenic pathways. In April, find Dutchman’s breeches and yellow lady slipper; in May, view rhododendron and mountain laurel. Hikes are held every Sunday and usually start at 2PM and last 1-2 hours.
On April 1, join the Eno River Association to hike the trails where the East and West Forks come together to form the Eno River. On this hike, you will also visit the historic Shepherd Mill site and learn what flowers are blooming along the way. This section, known as the Confluence Natural Area, is not open to the public, so this is your only chance! The Spring Wildflowers hike is 2.25 miles long over easy to moderate terrain.
On April 8, take the figure 8 loop hike on the Pea Creek and Dunnagan Trails. The 3.1 mile hike passes Buzzard Rock, crosses Pea Creek Bridge and the remains of the Pump Station Dam, and explores the beautiful stretch of the Eno River through rolling hills of forest in Eno River State Park. Meet at Pea Creek Trail Head.
April 15th explores the South River and Buffalo Trails on the 1.1 mile guided hike along small hills. This is your best pick if you’re trying to see the mountain laurel in full bloom. You will also have great views of the Eno River and Warren Creek.
Head into Eno River State Park again on Sunday, April 22 for the Pump Station Wildflowers hike. The 1.5 mile hike on a well-maintained trail is known for the wildflowers that display their full colors this time of year. With a little bit of luck and the perfect timing, you may even catch sight of a Ladyslipper orchid!
