Duke University's Nasher Museum of Art
Located at Duke University, the Nasher Museum of Art has extensive collections of historical and contemporary artwork. The Collection Galleries are full of ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman artifacts as well as Mesoamerican pottery, textiles, and metalwork. Masks and beadwork from Africa decorate the George Harley collection and devotional objects from the Middle Ages are on display beside stained glass from the Gothic period. And that doesn't even break the surface.
On exhibition is John Akomfrah's Precarity, an exploration of New Orleans through the remarkable, mythical life of Charles "Buddy Bolden," the man who founded the music we now call jazz. The acclaimed London-based artist and filmmaker uses a three-channel video presentation that is both a visual history of Bolden and breathtaking display of the city of New Orleans. Precarity is on exhibition until September 2, 2018. Visit the website for more information.
Nasher Museum also boasts a delicious cafe with a reputation for great food. Try the Artisanal Three Cheese or the Quinoa and Mango Salad alongside a glass of wine. On a hot day, cool off with some lemonade or iced tea before strolling through the beautiful galleries.
