Birdwatch for Bald Eagles on a Hike at Jordan Lake
Located just 20 minutes from downtown Chapel Hill, Jordan Lake Recreational Area is a local favorite for fishing, water-skiing, kayaking, and sailing. The 14,000 acre lake has access points on to the water, hosts 14 miles of hiking trails along its hilly landscape, and is also home to a large population of bald eagle nesting pairs. There are also seven swim beaches and interactive exhibits at the visitor center’s exhibit hall.
If you’re a nature-lover, Jordan Lake’s several trails are a perfect option to explore some of North Carolina’s best woodlands and waterside pathways. Keep your eye out for bald eagles and pack a picnic; all of these trails have picturesque spots for picnicking. The Bald Eagle Observation Platform is located at the north end of the lake on Martha’s Chapel Road, near Farrington Point.
The most challenging hiking trail at Jordan Lake is the New Hope Trail; its trailhead is found at the New Hope Overlook at the lake’s south end. Comprised of two moderate loops, what makes New Hope so difficult are the steep hills. One loop is 5.4 miles long and the other is 2.7 miles long but the rewards are tenfold; have your breath taken away by the sweeping views of the lake, hardwood forests, mountain laurel meadows, and lush creek crossings, and a variety of wildflowers and ferns. All other trails, like Vista Point and Ebenezer Church, are rated easy in difficulty.
Fishing is also a popular sport and pastime on the lake. Underwater stumps, logs, and rocks help create the perfect environment for populations of bass, crappie, catfish, and panfish.
